Salvation — what a beautiful word. In Christ, we are rescued from our sinful past and given the precious promises explored throughout this book.
But questions naturally arise. Is our salvation complete the moment we confess, repent, and believe? Is there a part of salvation still unfolding in our lives right now? Is God still shaping us? And is there a future dimension of salvation yet to be revealed when Christ returns?
The answer to all these questions is a resounding yes. Scripture presents salvation as completed, ongoing, and yet to be completed. It may feel paradoxical, but God’s Word affirms all three realities. Even when our minds struggle to grasp the fullness of this truth, we trust what God has revealed.
SALVATION IS COMPLETE
The moment you accepted Christ, you were completely and eternally saved. When your heart yielded and you called out to God, He answered with an unconditional yes.
Paul declared that all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. He is not describing a salvation that might happen someday, but one that is already accomplished.
Romans 10:9–10, 13 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. …13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Salvation is God’s work, not ours. It is accomplished by grace, not merit. Consider Jesus’ promise:
John 5:24 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”
Your salvation is done. You have crossed from death to life. You cannot be lost again. The stain of sin has been washed away. The condition of salvation is belief — trusting in Christ. At that moment, you received eternal life. Right now, you are born again. It is finished.
YOU ARE BEING SAVED
Yet God’s work in your life continues today. If you have accepted Christ, you are right now being saved.
1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
His power is actively shaping you. Our cooperation in this process is ongoing. God works in us so we can walk in the path of salvation.
Ephesians 4:20–24 20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Colossians 3:12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
The biblical word for this ongoing work is sanctification — God’s activity in the “now” as we await the “not yet.” We live in that tension. We know we are not yet what we will be.
Paul understood this struggle deeply. His words echo our own frustrations:
Romans 7:18–24 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. u For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?
These are painful words — and familiar ones. How often have you felt this frustration? You longed to do what was right, yet failed. You vowed, “Never again,” only to fall again. You sighed, discouraged, realizing you were already far down the wrong path.
But don’t stop reading.
Romans 7:25 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Through Jesus, salvation is ongoing. We participate in this work, but God supplies the power.
Philippians 2:12–13 12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
We do not work for salvation. We work from salvation. We do not earn what God has already given. His power brings our salvation toward its full expression.
The conclusion is profound: You have been saved, and you are being shaped to live as one set apart. Christlikeness is God’s purpose for your life. And the great news? He will not stop working on you.
Echo Paul’s words: “Thanks be to God!” The work is not done. You are being saved.
YOU WILL BE SAVED
Like dessert after a magnificent meal, the best is saved for last. The final stage of salvation is still ahead: you will be saved.
Scripture leaves no doubt. God has a glorious plan. Jesus did not save you merely for this world — He saved you so He could bring you into His presence forever.
Let these promises fall on your heart like a waterfall:
Philippians 3:20–21 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
Hebrews 9:28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
1 Peter 1:5–9 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Romans 8:17, 23 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. …23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.
Your salvation will reach its completion when Jesus welcomes you home. All who have been saved will be glorified. We will share in His glory.
Romans 13:11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
And the result?
Romans 15:13 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Thank you, Lord, for Your reassurance. We can shout, “Our salvation is nearer now!” Through every blessed day and every painful one, we declare, “Closer — I am closer now!” Glory is right around the corner. We are one step closer to home.
