Jesus' Answer to Man's Greatest Need
June 9, 2024, 6:56 PM

This week’s blog will be much shorter than normal.  I did not preach a normal message as our church celebrated Vacation Bible School.  I delivered a short message during the week and with the families today.    The text is Colossians 2:13-15.

THE PROBLEM

13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh,

From Adam and Eve until today we have a common problem.  We have all been sinners, by birth and by choice.

The first human sin brought the curse of death.  Spiritual death was immediate for them. Physical death began there.  Both physical and spiritual death is inevitable for all humankind unless there is a breakthrough.

THE SOLUTION-WHAT HE DID

God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,

Mankind’s sentence is death is interrupted by the work of Jesus.  He, through His death on the cross can make us alive.  He does that through the forgiveness of sin.

Jesus did not merely take the consequence of our sin; He took our sin.  He took it away.

HOW HE DID IT?

14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross

You owed a tremendous debt because of your sin.  You were guilty.  The books were written, recording your every sin.  But then…

He cancelled the charge!  This bookkeeping term speaks of the debt being written off.  We were to be condemned but we are set free.

Every sin you have committed was nailed to the cross.  Every single one.  They are all paid for, paid in full.  They are gone.

THE RESULT

15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

In Paul’s summation we hear an almost comical conclusion.  Jesus made a public spectacle of the enemy.

Satan surely rejoiced over Jesus when the Savior was hung upon the tree.  The nails must have caused the accuser glee.

But Jesus was not defeated on the cross.  He made a spectacle of Satan and defeated him completely and totally.  He is forever defeated.

Jesus is victorious.

This week I was pleased to witness the miraculous victory of Jesus multiple times.  Precious older children and youth heard the simple message of Jesus’ sacrifice and accepted His offer of salvation.

Would you join them this day?  Would you admit your sinfulness and need? Would you confess your belief that Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead?  Would you acknowledge Jesus as Lord, committing to follow Him?

The offer of Jesus stands.  He nailed your sin to the cross.  Accept His sacrifice.
